RIP Nelson Mandela // Pitchside Remembers

The last true leader of our time; it was announced late last night that Nelson Mandela had passed away at the age of 95, after struggling with his health for a number of years.

Here was a man that knew how to use the power of sport to unite a country, the most famous of which came with Francois Pienaar’s 1995 World Cup winning Springboks team that brought a country together, drawing such a difficult transitional period for South Africa.

Mandela was also crucial in bringing the FIFA World Cup to South Africa in 2010, the first time in the continent’s history that the tournament had been held there.

A charismatic man, the world along with Africa mourns the death of a truly great human-being.

RIP Nelson “Madiba” Mandela.
